Hey guys, Tangled's out at Empire Esplanade 6 Cinema (a few blocks up from the SeaBus) on the 24th and it would be really awesome if at least a few of us could go see it together and nerd over it like old times! Tribute.ca rates it a 5 out of 5, but no rating yet from Rotten Tomatoes.

Movie Night or Movie Get Together before Thanksgiving?

Hey guys, I was just wondering what people's schedules were like and if we might be able to plan something like a movie night at somebody's house (I'll volunteer mine) or a thing where we all go see a movie together. (Suggestions?) I just really want to see as many of you guys as possible before Thanksgiving, as I am moving back to the Okanagan then. Personally, I have weekends off. I understand that everyone is extremely busy, I just think it would be cool to see everybody again one more time.

Also, if anyone ever feels like going for a hike I'm always go for that. Thanks for reading.

OK, guys. I got the specifications last night and finished the ID template. I wrote the notes in there already, but please print and cut out yourself--just be sure to remember to bring it for gradshow!! It doesn't really matter what sort of paper since it'll be sitting pretty in a laminated case. Also be sure to keep your name big and your artwork light. You want these recruiters to know who you are!

I stopped by Sophia Books yesterday (at Hastings and Richards, as some of you may remember from our Studio B trip) and let me cut to the chase because you'll want to act quickly: they are having a closing sale. Everything's at least 40% off.

While I'm sad that they're closing, so soon after I even found out how awesome they are, I strongly recommend GETTING YOUR ASS OVER THERE. I am completely broke so had to leave some absolute gems behind, but holy crap next payday it's Sophia Books all the way.

(Oh and if you're wondering why I'm posting about some old bookstore to the class blog, they have a ton of art of-, making of-, and other animation related books and rare comics. So there.)

Just so's ya knows, the deadline for your grad pages is April 1st. This is the two-page thing that'll be in the grad book (and on the wall outside!).

We'll try to have the template for the pages next week but for now, think about what you want to be in them! :D

ALSO, we're most likely going with a self-portrait thinger to go on them, so start planning that as well. It doesn't have to be a cartoon YOU (but it can be!), just something to represent you. C: It can be a dinosaur even. Actually, if everyone did themselves as a dinosaur that would be awesome. Or robots. You can go to gradshow.com to see exaaamples.

Anyway, yeah. The deadline was originally going to be the middle of March so... Yay April 1st! Which means everyone's pages should look extra spectacular!

Olympic Pool Now Open!

Anyone checking our gradshow blog will see the exact same post. That's because I'm cheap and x-posted it here. I mean..it was just so informative as is.

Just a heads up, I'm offically starting the Gradshow Olympic Pool today. The cut off day is next Thursday night, so if you want to place a bet on which country is going to win the most gold medals you need to get your bet into either myself or Rosy by then.

$2 minimum per bet and $5 is the cut off. The winner is going to be the person who picks the right country and gets the correct (or closest to correct) number of medals. Multiple bets per person is alright with me, just as long as each bet is for a different country.

The winner will receive half of the total raised, the other half going to Gradshow. In the unlikely case that no one selects the winning country, all funds will go directly to Gradshow.

So lets have some fun with this guys, it's all in good sport, and good luck to everyone!

Weekend Hike in Lynn Canyon for Colour Theory Homework!

Hey guys! This Sunday (or Saturday) me and Peach were thinking it would be awesome to all go on a hike in Lynn Canyon Park to get our colour homework done. Lynn Canyon is easy to get to and has a lot to offer for this assignment, including a suspension bridge, a bunch of other random bridges, gorgeous pacific forest, riparian areas and Rice Lake, so lots of opportunities! I've been all over the area as I used to live right next to it, so don't worry about getting lost. Talk to me at school if you wanna come. Still don't have the details worked out yet, but hopefully will soon. If you do come, make sure to bring a water bottle, maybe a little snack and of course your drawing supplies. Also, wear the sturdiest footwear that you have. The trails are mild and in excellent condition, but it would suck if your nice shoes got dirty or anything, y'know?

The hike itself is extremely beginner and very short, so don't worry about that!

EDIT: Meet at Phibbs Exchange at 11 am. If you're not there by 12, I'm leaving without you. (Unless you phone/text me.)

Hey guys! so we had our first design club meeting today just to shoot around some ideas for exercises and what not. i think we all realized that we started it a bit too early, so maybe 10 or 11:00 would be better for next week.
Even though we started without some people that wanted to take part, everyone is still invited!
This week we are doing a simple exercise with expressions. Chelsea knows where to get the expression sheet. you can use your own character or an established one.
This is kind of a boring exercise, but we thought starting simple would be the best. There were so many GREAT ideas for upcoming exercises!
We were thinking of doing a bit of peer feedback, but I think we'll have to come up with a better way of getting someone who actually knows what they are doing to give us some professional feedback.

For those of you who want to improve in design please please come!
We should start thinking about our final portfolios now!!!

Live Next to Capilano!

'kay guys, here's the detailed scoop of what I wrote on our white board. My roommate Jess is moving out for the rest of the school year so I need a new roomie for mid November. I know a lot of you guys are pretty established and don't want to move anywhere, but if you know any friendly geeky people who want to be near Cap' (it's VERY convenient; 2-5 minute walk to Capilano depending on how lazy you are) please pass them on to me or get them to phone my roommate Jess at the below number!

My place is pretty spacious and the room you'd be taking is Jess'. We have a full living room, kitchen and bathroom, with pretty nice ensuite laundry facilities. Besides that we have a nice balcony which has a nice view of the neighbourhood and mountains. Small pets like cats are okay! We share all cleaning responsibilities but if you make a mess, you're expected to clean up after yourself of course. We also share utility bills, which are low. (About $50 a month at the most.) The rent is $600 and is worth it for the location.

Need to work late at Cap'? No problem! Accidentally sleep in until ten to nine? No problem either! (I've done this.) There's no buses involved with going to school from here. :) For conveniance, Superstore is also just down the hill and Phibbs Exchange isn't very far away either on foot.

Another nice part of living here is that the landlords are nice and really care about their tenants. This place would be excellent for anyone in the animation program, commercial or digital.

So if you like geeky stuff like Star Wars and pretty much any animated movie in existance than I'd love to hear from you.

RECAP:

-Next door to Capilano on Purcell Way in the Purcell Woods complex - if you're late it's no problem.
-Small pets are allowed! Especially cats! I love cats!

Here's a neat little 18 minute segment faturing fifteen famous animators in Japan animating whatever they like in 60 seconds. Some of them are pretty awesome, but it gets kind of lame near the end. It's worth pointing out the short "frolicking" is done by animator Michael Arias. He is the first westerner to direct a japanese animated film and has worked on films like El Dorado, Prince of Egypt and Spirited Away. I just thought that was pretty cool.

So I don't know how many of you have hear of or have been following the misadventures of Bill C-61 but it's back again. And for a little while longer, the government is holding a copyright consultation.

That means there's still time for us to get our voices in there and say to the people in charge "Hey! My school fees are high enough as it is! That being said, they seem to have time this so that the loudest voices (Post Secondary Students and Faculty) would be out of the loop and the consultation ends on September 13th. I know that doesn't seem like a lot of time and sure some people are probably wondering what chance they have of tracking down some government offical to talk to them about it...Though I can't imagine why..Not when we have the faster means of communicating our thoughts right here. Yes, the internet.

There are a lot of groups out there that have been tracking this bill and doing their best to spread the word to people that might not otherwise be aware that anythings happening at all. And now they have submission guides and such up to help.

So please, take a few minutes to read through the linked guide and send in an email before the 13th. Even if you can't see how it could possibly effect you in the future or right now for that matter, take the time and see what's happening because it could very well change the way we find work in the future if nothing else.

Late night double feature picture show (...no, not that one)

Hi, sorry to spam, but does anybody want to go to a midnight double feature ("Day The Earth Stood Still" and "Forbidden Planet") on FRIDAY? At The Rio (at Broadway and Commercial)?

Yeah, it's a little soon but I had to ask... I have a slight problem with getting back to North Van after the show, you see, because it ends so late, so the reason I'm REALLY asking is I'm hoping to find someone willing to either a] stay out at some all-night hangout with me while I bide my time and wait for the public transportation to start running again (am open to hangout place suggestions), b] let me sleep over on their couch (if they live anywhere near there) or c] share the cab fee to North Van with me (if they live in North Van)! AND, maybe, willing to see some ace 50's sci-fi flicks. Whaddaya say? I'll owe you one! Coooome on! :D

Hi Gang! Welcome back! I'm glad everyone made it back and registered. Regardless of what you may have heard from the Man, We'll be starting classes on Tuesday with Florian 9am - 4pm. However, if anyone's interested in volunteering for Orientation activities for new students, please drop me an email. It wouldn't be all day.

As for seating arrangements, this will be done randomly. Stay tuned to this blog for final details. You may of course trade places with people if they're willing to do so.

We're using TV Paint for line testing! It worked great in the summer program. You'll also need to be familiar with it in the 2D digital animation course. Work through those tutorials on the Google Group!

New Cintiq's in the lab! We have several more Cintiqs (a little more than 2/3's of the class). Only the end rows have regular monitors. Get to class on time if you like drawing on the screen and access to Cintiqs outside of class shouldn't be a problem now.

John Delaney is heading off to the sunny Okanagan after almost 15 years of teaching at Cap. He's coming back occasionally with his band, The Indestructibles, and will be at Coquitlam's Boulevard Casino on Friday September 18th. If you would like to send him off, keep that night free. We'll also try to get him in for some guest lectures. Good luck in Kelowna, John!

I'm looking for some suggestions on good books to invest in. Mostly for inspiration or maybe useful advice when it comes to design (Character or Backgrouds, maybe even both).

I don't know..sometimes it just helps to have something cool to look at, or at least that seem to be the case for me. So do any of you guys have some books you'd like to suggested that I can look into?

Also..is there a book list for this year because I'm not finding one.

You will be getting timetables near the end of August. December 18th. Last day of classes. First day of classes, fourth semester.

Feb. 12 - 28: Extended Reading Break due to Olympics. Room access will likely not be permitted. April 30th, 2010. Last day of classes. Grad show date to be determined.

Also, the 2D Digital assignment will be to create a 15 second "station I.D." for Teletoon, Cartoon Network, MTV or YTV that has impressive character animation and uses either Flash or TV Paint. Sorry to spam but just so you know, Ghostbusters & Ghostbusters 2 are showing at Granville 7 on Friday June 26th. LET'S GO! It's fun. May I humbly suggest a pre- (or after!)movie(s) dinner at The Templeton?

The weirdest thing: trying to confirm the showtime online, I ran into ANOTHER double bill screening & full-blown fan event at Rio Theatre on Saturday June 20th?!? Two screenings of both Ghostbusters movies in Vancouver in one month has to be a first. The one at Rio is more expensive and the cartoon series is not worth any money at all, though the symmetrical book stacking contest sounds like a hoot... I must say that, to me, Rio has a definite disadvantage in being so far away from Templeton.

Super congrats to Chelsea and Peach! Some day when your shows are in production please hear me out if I show up looking for a job! ;D Aaaaaand, to fit in with the first two paragraphs of this post: Templeton.
